Mädchenchor Wernigerode As long as I have Music

With youthful freshness and a sophisticated sound culture, the young singers of the renowned Mädchenchor Wernigerode (Wernigerode Girls' Choir) offer a multifaceted glimpse into their repertoire. As one of the ensembles at the State High School for Music in Saxony-Anhalt, the Wernigerode Girls' Choir upholds a special tradition of folk song cultivation. However, this album showcases how the choir's repertoire has considerably expanded over the years: Sacred and secular choral works from various centuries are performed, ranging from Giovanni Croce's "Cantate Domino" from the musical Renaissance to contemporary gospel inflections with David Waggoner's "Alleluia! I Will Sing," through the folk song tradition in Christian Gottlob Neefe's "Was frag ich viel nach Geld und Gut," to a contemporary arrangement of the well-known Irish folk song "Danny Boy" and Harry Warren's swing classic "Chattanooga Choo Choo."

The choir always impresses with the special sound experience of the upper voice parts, accompanied by skilful piano arrangements in diverse and interesting settings. Under the artistic direction of Steffen Drebenstedt, a conscious blend of various genres and moods has been combined—sometimes delicate, joyful, serious, but always resonant.
