It is the largest organ in Saxony and is still one of the most important instruments in Leipzig: the organ of St Nikolai Church in Leipzig, built in 1862 by Friedrich Ladegast. After reconstruction measures at the beginning of the 20th century by Wilhelm Sauer, the historic organ was reconstructed in 2002/03 by the organ building company Hermann Eule from Bautzen and some French-Romantic tone colors were added.

Lucas Pohle – once Nikolai cantor, meanwhile professor at the University of Protestant Church Music – under the formative impression of the COVID-19 pandemic, in 2020 put together a program with works by Bach, Mendelssohn and finally Karg-Elert and Reger, whose serious character cannot be denied. Particularly impressive is Pohle's organ improvisation on the boys' chant of Psalm 91 by Julius Paul Oskar Schmidt.
