Leipziger Barockorchester
The Leipzig Baroque Orchestra was founded in 1995 and during the past few years has won widespread acclaim for its interpretations of music of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The musicians in the Leipzig Baroque Orchestra play exclusively on historical instruments or authentic replicas and combine their in-depth understanding of historical performance practices with a style of playing that is remarkable both for its vitality and its expressive range. The orchestra brings together numerous specialists in ancient music from all over central Germany, including members of the MDR Symphony Orchestra and Gewandhaus Orchestra Leipzig and several outstanding instrumentalists and soloists belonging to some of Germany’s most important ancient music ensembles.
In Leipzig alone, the orchestra’s busy schedule includes regular concerts with the Choir of St. Thomas’s under Thomas Cantor Georg Christoph Biller, its highly acclaimed performances of cantatas, Christmas oratorios and Passions together with the Leipzig Vocal Ensemble under David Timm and instrumental concerts for the MDR Music Summer and Bach Festival Leipzig. In 2003, it also began a concert series in the large courtroom of the German Administrative Court.
To these can be added the orchestra’s concerts with the Bremen Cathedral Choir, Bad Tölz Boys’ Choir, Hannover Boys’ Choir, Dresden Vocal Ensemble, Josquin des Prez Chamber Choir, Cantores Lipsienses and Calmus Ensemble. Guest performances and concert tours have also taken the Leipzig Baroque Orchestra to France and Gran Canaria as well as on a resoundingly successful trip to Japan.
