Marienorganist Johannes Unger
In April 2009, Johannes Unger was selected as organist at St Mary’s Church in Lübeck. He was born in Saxony in 1976, and was raised in a very musical family. He studied piano, organ, and church music at Leipzig and Copenhagen. Among his teachers were Ullrich Böhme (the current organist at St Thomas Leipzig), Hans Fagius, and Markus Thomas. Between 2003 and 2009, he was the assistant organist at St Thomas Leipzig. Unger attracted international attention when he won three renowned international organ competitions in short succession: at Odense (Denmark), St Albans (UK), and the Leipzig Bachpreis in 2000. At St Mary’s Lübeck, one of his main duties is playing the organ in both concerts and services. In addition, he founded the ensemble Capella St. Marien. He composed a work titled ‘Seligpreisungen’ for two organs, bass, and female choir, to be performed at the Lübecker Abendmusiken in 2010. He dedicates the Buxtehude-Tage, which have been held annually since 2010, to his illustrious predecessor Dieterich Buxtehude. Concerts and master classes saw Johannes Unger visit many European countries, North America, and Australia. He regularly produces recordings for radio and CD. In 2009, he was engaged as a teacher at the Musikhochschule Lübeck. www.johannesunger.de
