Domkantorei St. Martin
The Domkantorei St Martin was founded by the Cathedral’s former Domkapellmeister (the Cathedral’s director of music) Professor Mathias Breitschaft in 1987. The ensemble brings together over one-hundred singers, some of whom were trained as members of the Mainz Cathedral choir or the girls’ choir, attached to both the Cathedral and St Quintin, in their youth. The Domkantorei regularly sings at the Cathedral’s services, in alternation with the boys’ and girls’ choirs. At the Cathedral’s concert series, the mixed-voice ensemble has performed the entire standard repertoire of oratorios and choral mass settings which post-date Johann Sebastian Bach. The choir’s ventures with conductors such as Riccardo Chailly, Giuseppe Sinopoli, David Shallon, and Louis Langrée, as well as with orchestras including the Beethoven-Orchester Bonn, the Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz, and the Jerusalem Symphony-Orchestra are just some highlights from its history. The Domkantorei St Martin has equally made a name for itself through CD recordings, radio broadcasts, and television productions. Concert tours have seen the choir travel to Rome, Israel, the Czech Republic, the USA, Belgium, Poland, England, and France. Since August 2012, the singers have been directed by Domkapellmeister Karsten Storck.
