Assaf Levitin
Born in Israel, Assaf Levitin is an active concert and opera singer (bass baritone), and also works as a composer, arranger, choir director, teacher, and cantor. In 2016, he completed his training as a cantor at the Abraham Geiger Kolleg of the Universität Potsdam. He worte his Master’s thesis about Hemsi’s liturgical music. With his ensemble “Die Drei Kantoren”, he has been part of the official cultural programme sponsored by the Zentralrat der Juden in Deutschland since 2014. In 2017, he founded the Kolot Vocal Quintet, an ensemble for Jewish and Israeli music which bases its repertoire on Assaf Levitin’s arrangements. Since December 2016, Assaf Levitin has held the post of cantor at the Liberal Jewish synagogue at Hanover. His recording of the Mainz Nusach (Schott, Mainz 2004) is considered to be the benchmark recording of the South German liturgical tradition and it is frequently referenced by experts. In 2016, he performed at numerous old synagogues in Germany and Poland as part of the Mekomot (Orte) project, giving five works their debut performances and presenting several classical Chazzanut.
