Duo Klangdimension
Martina Holler and Hermann Rid got to know each other while studying music in Munich. Occasionally they would play their newly-learnt pieces to each other. Then one day they decided to make music together, combining saxophone and harp. The duo Klang Dimension was born.
As Martina Holler returned to Munich from Hamburg in 1989, the two musicians began to work intensively together. Such an unusual combination of instruments meant that there was hardly any music to draw on. So they experimented, trying out music for flute and harp, oboe and harp and other similar pairings. The first pieces they played together were adaptations of works by J. S. Bach and Leonardo Vinci. At the same time, the duo continued to search for original material. The repertoire grew and in 1990 they gave their first joint concert.
“A morsel of the best musical quality, using only the best ingredients” was the Süddeutsche Zeitung's opinion, following one of their concerts. Farao Classics released its first saxophone and harp CD in 1995, with Klang Dimension. Since 1996, their concerts have featured Hermann Rid playing both alto and soprano saxophone, adding another dimension to their sound. In 1999 the pioneering musicians received an invitation from composer Ida Gotkovsky (b. 1933) now resident in France. A composition dedicated to them is soon to be released on CD. Professor Dieter Acker (Munich Musikhochschule) has also shown his respect for the two musicians by composing a work especially for them.
On this CD too, produced by Rondeau Productions, the pair only play pieces which have been dedicated to Klang Dimension. Klaus Brenninger, who studied theory of composition with Georg Becker and Richard Heller, has dedicated his Fünf Movimenti to the duo. Franz Kanefzky, who began composing at the age of twelve, has contributed his Drei Episoden für Altsaxophon und Harfe – a collection of character pieces – to the CD.
